国際連合食糧農業機関（FAO）は、国連の食料・農業に関する専門機関です。膨大な量のグローバルな技術的知見や情報を保持していますが、言語の制約や情報の専門性がハードルとなり、日本では、まだ十分に活用・アクセスされていないのが現状です。この現状に対処するため、農学知的支援ネットワーク（Japan Intellectual Support Network in Agricultural Sciences, JISNAS）とFAO駐日連絡事務所が連携し、FAOの最新情報を日本語で提供するのが、年に二回実施するこの合同セミナーです。日本の大学・学生、研究者及び研究機関の皆様方への情報発信とともに、日本とFAOとのより一層緊密な連携を推進するものです。
新型コロナウイルス感染症（COVID-19）、鳥インフルエンザ、その他の人と動物に共通する感染症（Zoonosis：ズーノーシス）の発生と世界的な拡大は、人間、動物、環境の健康が相互に密接に関連していることを浮き彫りにしました。この「ワンヘルス（One Health）」という概念は、将来のパンデミックを防ぐために、各分野が連携することの重要性を強調しています。従来の公衆衛生対策は、人の健康だけに焦点を当てることが多く、動物の健康や環境要因、動物から人へ感染する疾患の出現といった複雑な相互関係が見落とされがちでした。ワンヘルス・アプローチは、より包括的かつ予防的なパンデミック対策を可能にします。
FAOは、人間、動物、植物、環境の健康のために、農業・食料システムの変革の一環としてワンヘルス・アプローチを推進しています。このアプローチには、持続可能な農業、家畜・作物・森林・水産物の健康、食品安全、薬剤耐性（AMR）、食料安全保障、栄養、人々の生計といった幅広い分野の関係者と活動が含まれます。ワンヘルス・アプローチを確実に実施することは、人と動物の間で感染が広がる疾患の予測、防止、検出、制御、薬剤耐性への対応、食品の安全性の確保、環境に起因する人や動物の健康リスクの予防、その他多くの課題への対応において、極めて重要です。また、持続可能な開発目標（SDGs）の達成にも欠かせない取り組みです。
本セミナーでは、ワンヘルスの基本的な概念や最新の動向に加え、FAOのワンヘルス・アプローチの役割と活動について紹介します。

11th JISNAS-FAO Seminar:
“One Health in agrifood systems, for the health of people, animals and ecosystems”
The global technical knowledge held by United Nations agencies and international organizations has not been fully utilized in Japan due to language constraints and the technical nature of information. Therefore, as an opportunity to provide the latest information from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), a specialized agency of the United Nations on food and agriculture, the Japan Intellectual Support Network in Agricultural Sciences (JISNAS) and the FAO Liaison Office in Japan have been collaborating to hold joint seminars. Our aim is to disseminate information to Japanese universities, students, researchers, and research institutions, as well as to promote closer collaboration between Japan and FAO.
The emergence and global spread of COVID-19, Avian Flu and other zoonotic diseases cast a spotlight on the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. This concept, known as One Health, highlights the critical role of a collaborative approach across sectors to prevent future pandemics. Traditional public health strategies often focus on human health in isolation, neglecting the complex interplay between animal health, environmental factors, and the emergence of zoonotic diseases (those transmissible from animals to humans). The One Health approach offers a more holistic and proactive strategy for pandemic prevention.
FAO promotes a One Health approach as part of agrifood system transformation for the health of people, animals, plants and the environment. This involves a spectrum of actors and work on sustainable agriculture, animal, crops, forest, and aquaculture health, food safety, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), food security, nutrition and livelihoods. Ensuring a One Health approach is essential for progress to anticipate, prevent, detect and control diseases that spread between animals and humans, tackle AMR, ensure food safety, prevent environment-related human and animal health threats, as well as combatting many other challenges. A One Health approach is also critical for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This seminar will introduce the basic concept and latest updates on One Health, as well as FAO’s roles and activities on the One Health approach.
