学校法人アジア学院常務理事荒川朋子は、このたび、農村医学の先駆者・若月俊一氏の遺志を継ぎ、農村医療や地域保健、国際協力、地域活性化に顕著な貢献をした個人・団体に贈られる「若月賞」（主催：若月賞選考委員会／JA長野厚生連佐久総合病院）を受賞いたしました。
アジア・アフリカをはじめとする開発途上国の農村リーダーを50年以上にわたり育成し、持続可能な有機農業を通じたコミュニティの自立支援に尽力してきた功績が高く評価されたものです。

■ 受賞の背景と評価されたポイント
「若月賞」は、長野県佐久総合病院の元名誉院長・若月俊一氏の「農民とともに」という思想をベースに、地域医療や福祉、農村文化の向上に貢献した人々を顕彰するものです。
今回のアジア学院の受賞においては、以下の点が特に高く評価されました。
草の根の「人づくり」による国際貢献 1973年の創立以来、アジア、アフリカ、太平洋諸国などの農村地域から指導者を招き、自立のための実践的な研修を実施。卒業生は60カ国・1,400名を超え、それぞれの帰国先で地域の課題解決（保健衛生の向上、貧困削減、教育支援など）を牽引しています。
「健康な命」を支える有機農業の実践 ただ農業技術を教えるだけでなく、地域の資源を活かした持続可能な「有機農業」と「家畜飼育」を学びの柱とし、人々の健康と地球環境を守る食糧生産のあり方を提唱し続けている点。
「共に生きる（That We May Live Together）」コミュニティの体現 国籍、宗教、民族の違いを超え、寝食を共にしながら共に働き（労働）、共に食べる（食卓）という全人格的な共同生活を通じた、平和的で民主的な地域づくりのモデルを提示している点。

■ アジア学院 常務理事 荒川朋子：7月10日・11日に長野県佐久市の佐久総合病院で開催された「第65回農村医学夏季大学講座」にて行われた若月賞授賞式に、私が学院代表として出席しました。表彰状と副賞をいただいたほか、受賞記念講演も行ってまいりました。
若月賞とは、「長野県の佐久総合病院で地域医療や農村医学の発展に尽力した医師・若月俊一氏（1910-2006）の功績を記念し、保健・医療・福祉の分野において、草の根的に真摯な活動を続け、多大な貢献を果たした個人や団体が顕彰される」賞です。
「農村医学とアジア学院？」と思われるかもしれません。しかし、農村に生きる人々の健康と福祉を守り、地域全体の幸福と平和へとつなげていくという点において、私たちが掲げる目標は完全に一致していると感じました。若月氏は「農村は母」という言葉を残し、農村をいのちの源、またそれを育む場として慈しんでおられました。会場の農村保健教育ホールにも「農村住民とともにTogether with Rural People」という標語が掲げられています。これら一連の理念に触れ、アジア学院が大切にしている多くの価値観がそこにあることを強く実感しました。
■ アジア学院の「共に生きる」学びのシステム
アジア学院の研修期間（約9ヶ月間）は、言葉や文化の壁を取り払い、「実践を通じた学び (Learning by Doing)」が通底しています。
自立のための「適正技術（Appropriate Technology）」： 高価な機械や化学肥料に頼るのではなく、現地で手に入る資源を最大限に活かし、持続可能な方法でコミュニティを豊かにする技術を学びます。
農・食・命の循環： キャンパス内の農場で学生自身の手で有機野菜を育て、家畜を世話し、それを自ら調理して食べる。このいのちの循環「フードライフ」を身をもって体験することが、健康なコミュニティづくりの基礎となります。
サーバント・リーダーシップ： 支配するリーダーではなく、人々に「仕え、支える」指導者としてのあり方を学びます。
■ 今後の展望
気候変動による食糧危機や国際情勢の不安定化が進む現代において、農村が自立し、自らの食糧を自らの手で確保する「食糧主権（Food Sovereignty）」の重要性はかつてないほど高まっています。
アジア学院は、今回の受賞を大きな励みとし、次の50年に向けて、気候変動に適応する持続可能な有機農業技術のアップデートや、グローバルな卒業生ネットワークを活かした災害支援・地域開発活動をさらに強化してまいります。

TOCHIGI, JAPAN - Asian Rural Institute (ARI) is pleased to announce that our Managing Director Tomoko Arakawa has received the 34th Wakatsuki Award on behalf of the institute. Hosted by the Wakatsuki Award Selection Committee and JA Nagano Kouseiren Saku Central Hospital, the award honors individuals and organizations that carry forward the spirit of rural medicine pioneer Dr. Shunichi Wakatsuki through outstanding contributions to rural healthcare, community health, international cooperation, and regional revitalization.

The Wakatsuki Award honors those who contribute to regional medicine, welfare, and rural culture based on the philosophy of "Together with Rural People," championed by the late Dr. Shunichi Wakatsuki, former Honorary Director of Saku Central Hospital in Nagano Prefecture.

Comment from Tomoko Arakawa, Executive Director"On July 10 and 11, I attended the 34th Wakatsuki Award ceremony on behalf of ARI during the 65th Summer University Seminar on Rural Medicine at Saku Central Hospital in Saku City, Nagano Prefecture. In addition to receiving the award certificate and recognition, I had the honor of delivering a commemorative lecture.
The Wakatsuki Award recognizes individuals and organizations carrying on the legacy of Dr. Shunichi Wakatsuki (1910-2006), who dedicated his life to advancing community medicine and rural health.
You might wonder, 'What is the connection between rural medicine and the Asian Rural Institute?' However, I felt our ultimate goals align completely in protecting the health and welfare of rural people to foster peace and wellbeing across communities. Dr. Wakatsuki left us with the words 'Rural areas are our mothers,' cherishing rural communities as the source and nurturer of life. The slogan 'Together with Rural People' was also displayed in the venue’s Rural Health Education Hall. Experiencing these shared philosophies reaffirmed how deeply ARI’s core values resonate with his vision."

ARI’s approximately nine-month training program breaks down language and cultural barriers through a shared philosophy of "Learning by Doing."
Appropriate Technology for Self-Reliance: Rather than relying on expensive machinery or chemical fertilizers, participants learn techniques that maximize locally available resources to enrich communities sustainably.
The Cycle of Farming, Food, and Life ("Foodlife"): On campus, participants grow organic vegetables, care for livestock, and cook their own meals. Experiencing this cycle of life firsthand serves as the foundation for building healthy, self-sufficient communities.
